Welsh attempt to win N.Z. cycling medal
(From RAY CAIRNS)
LEVIN.
For probably the first time in their history, the New Zealand amateur hard-track cycling championships will be contested by a Welshman riding as a representative of Wales, not of any local centre.
John Tudor, the front man on the tandem which was beaten by New Zealand’s pair for the bronze medal at the Christchurch Commonwealth Games, is living in Wellington.
Tonight, he will ride the kilometre time trial, the first final to be decided at the championships, which start this afternoon. Main threat Tudor has been given the prestige position of last rider to race the 1000 metres, behind the title-hold-er, Jacob Schriek, of Canterbury. However, he is not expected to represent a major threat to Schriek; this is exSected to come from fichael Fabish (West CoastNorth Island), who starts immediately before the Canterbury policeman. One of the Canterbury senior sprinters, three of the juniors, and the tandem pair (Lester Vette and Schriek) face tough first-round matchings on this refurbished 450-metre track. Litolff’s task Michael Litolff, the most experienced sprinter now riding in New Zealand, has drawn the speedy young Otago rider, Frank Collins, and th* former national road representative, Brent Pascoe (Waikato), in his first round. Kim Reid has perhaps the least enviable job: he rides against last year’s brilliant under-16 champion, Anthony Cuff (W.C.N.1.). Two other Canterbury juniors with demanding first rides are Kevin Basher, who has drawn Max Neumegdn (East Coast-North Island), and Frank Schaapveld, who meets Michael Richards (Auckland) and Keith Barlow (Waikato).
