Hornby contract let
A contract has been let for the first large block of permanent classrooms for the Hornby High School. The school, which opened on February 3, was the first
secondary school in the country to use relocatable classrooms which will be replaced by permanent buildings in seven stages. The first stage of the new contract covers five classrooms, a typing room, two laboratories and ancillary buildings. These buildings are due for completion by next February.
The remaining part of the contract, which is due for completion by February, 1977, is for two classrooms and an audio-visual lecture theatre.
The Department of Education has told the Christchurch Secondary Schools Council that building of the first stage of the contract will begin immediately. At its meeting this week, the Secondary Schools Council expressed concern that Hornby High School in Carmen Road was being hampered because estimated completion dates for the construction of the present buildings and grounds had now passed. A motion passed by the council appealed for all parties to the contract to give urgency to completing work on the school.
