Surprise for Australians

Australians, many of whom have been criticised by Parliamentarians of all parties as workshy, were surprised today to hear that some of them are suffering from work addiction.

A hospital psychiatrist in Sydney said yesterday that the addiction — “a condition characterised by inability to relax at the week-end”— was on the rise in Australia. Dr William Orchard, of the Prince Henry Hospital, told a medical conference in Melbourne: “Work addiction is pommon among businessmen who have a record of success. Such men become compulsive workers, which is very similar to suffering from drug addiction—the ‘hooked’ victim tends to withdraw from the world and other people.
