MACABRE FIND
Witchcraft theory
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright)
MELBOURNE, Feb. 25.
Melbourne homicide detectives are investigating a possible witchcraft link in the death of a woman whose naked body was found at the mouth of the Kennet River on Sunday. The police believe that the woman, whose left arm had been removed below the elbow, may have been the victim of a sacrificial killing: they began investigating that theory today after the discovery of a 14in-high clay figure of a woman by a schoolteacher in a tree fork and close to the area where the woman’s body was found. The clay figure has the left arm missing.
The police have still not identified the woman, whose estimated age is between 18 and 30. Her body was tanned, and she had been wearing a brief bikini. A doctor who examined the body yesterday told the police he was not satisfied that the woman had drowned.
