Appeal for children
Sir, —In Cathedral Square last Friday I was accosted by a man who thrust a pamphlet into my hands. Before I could glance at it he said, “Have you got a few cents for the children?” As 1 knew an appeal for handicapped children was imminent, . I gave the “few cents” to what I considered a good cause. However, when I read the pamphlet eventually, I discovered that I had unwittingly subsidised the “Children of God.” It may be coincidence that the I.H.C. appeal was to take place on the day after my donation; it may be coincidence that the man asked for money in the way he did; and it is certainly mv fault that I did not identify the children more accurately before giving. I cannot help feeling that sometimes God (or some of his self-appointed family) moves not so much in a mysterious as in a devious way.—Yours, etc., ROB JACKAMAN. February 23, 1975.
