Young ewes to $16.60 at Hawarden

Both two-tooth and adult ewes reached their strongest point of the season at the Hawarden ewe fair last week. It again drew a large gallery of buyers, who were prepared to pay well for good sheep. As usual, quality was particularly good. Both the twotooth and adult lines were rated as being better than sheep seen at Amberley earlier in the week, and not surprisingly, values were higher. The fair left little doubt that there is a shortage of sheep this season. Very few of the annual lines were split among buyers — the top bidders regularly "took the line,” and in one case this involved more than 450 ewes. In both sections of the sale, prices were well above estimates made beforehand. Vendors felt they had had a very good sale for the season. The two-tooth sale never lacked for interest, as first a Mid-Canterbury buyer paid Sl5, and later the $l6 mark was reached, and duly exceeded. The top price of the sec-: tion was $16.60 paid by a Pleasant Point buyer for a ; pen of 70 from F. K. Forres’- ; ter (Heatherdale). F. E.i Booker (Longfield), obtained $16.40. also for a pen of 70, and Quigley Bros estate •. (Kingsmoor), received sl6' l for 78. BEST PEN AT FAIR R L. Brooker (Haddon) was, paid $15.80 for 70; L. C. Fincham; <T« Kouka), $15.20 for 84, and! Tenterden Downs, Ltd, Sl5 for 81. The pen from Tenterden : Downs was earlier judged the best pen in the fair, so winning! l the Clifton Cup. The two-tooth sale was in every I respect an excellent one for the season. and it gathered;' strength as selling progressed.; Competition on the smaUer tus- • sock sheep was 'as brisk as on the feature pens. A comparison of 17 pens of 1 two-tooths with 21 sold by the;; same vendors last year showed a decline of 30 per cent, but this was to be expected. However, breeding ewe prices have not fallen as far as the wool markets during the year, although they are in line with the decline in lamb. At the Christchurch wool sale! In January last year, the main weight of halfbred and Corriedale fleece ranged from 190 c to 210 c a kilogram, with top lines to 244 c. A 12.5 kilogram lamb, with wool opened in October.! 1973. at $10.44. By the end of January it was worth $8.70. ADULT EWES Adult ewes met a keen demand throughout, and the sale ended with many prospective , buyers unable to fill their re-J quirements. The ewes invariably l came forward in excellent order. This, also, was to be expected,; 1 for the district has never had . so much feed in February as,' this year. '( Most of the annual lines sold, in the $8 to $9 range. I Twenty lines averaged out ath >8.40 a pen. which was a little more than 40 per cent back on last vear’s rates. Several of the top pens fetched more than S 9. Timpendean Farm, Ltd iWaikarii led the section with a pen of 312 five-year-olds , at $9.80. Last year the line fetched $17.50. i K. A. Rutherford (Melrose) received $9.40 for 454 four-year-olds. This was one of the largest lines of the day. E. O. Carr • Bonjedward! was paid $9.20 for 374 four-year-olds. Two hundred ( five-vear-olds from J. K. For j; tester (Black Hills) fetched 59.10 , and 259 of the same description from P. A. Carr fGlenallenl ! reached $9. Buving inquirv was widespread,;, sheep being bought for Waiau , south to Pleasant Point. But the! 1 bulk of the yarding appeared to go to Mid-Canterbury buyers and early-lambing districts such I. as Ellesmere, Dunsandel, 1 Weedons. Halkett, and Aylesbury. 1 The fair drew a yarding of • 14.130, compared with 16.080 last , year, and consisted of 4380 two- , tooth ewes <4890 last year) and, 9750 adult sheep <11,190 last l year Details of sales were, all sheep , being Corriedale unless other- 1 wise stated:— 1 Pyne, Gould Guinness, Ltd, ' sold on eccount of:,— J.
