Youths die when car hits milk truck

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. Two youths were killed when the car in which they were passengers hit a stationary milk truck in Upper Hutt early on Sunday. They were

Adrian David Payne, aged 15, and Whareiaia Pita Plrika, aged 17, both of Upper Hutt.

A third Upper Hutt youth, Karl Edward McCullough, aged 16, the driver of the car, was taken to Hutt Hospital and discharged. The accident occurred at 3 a.m. on Fergusson Drive, near the intersection with Cruickshank Road. Nearly 11,000 bottles of

milk and cream were broken in the accident as the car rammed the rear of the truck, ripping most of its roof off. Firemen spent nearly an hour extricating the bodies from the big 1964-model car. They did not leave the scene until shortly after 6.30 a.m. High-pressure hoses and brooms were used to clear the road of milk and broken bottles. The police described the accident as “the worst we have had up here for years.”
