Brazilian G.P. won by Pace
(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) INTERLAGOS (Brazil). Jose Carlos Pace (Brazil), with a display of consistently smooth but unspectacular driving, beat his fellow-countryman, Emerson Fittipaldi, to win the Brazilian Formula One grand prix.
Pace, in a Brabham, was never out of the first three from the start.
He passed the Brabham of Carios Reutemann (Argentina) to take second position on the thirteenth lap, and his victory was virtually clinched when Jean-Pierre Jarier (France) in a UOP Shadow, dropped out on the thirtysecond lap. Jarier, after a spectacular display of sustained speed, had rocketed into first position over 27 laps. If the victory of Pace delighted his fellowBrazilians, it was the performance of Jarier which astounded the spectators. Jarier had established the best times in the practices to win pole position, but few experts thought he could keep up the pace in his Shadow for any distance over the 16 perilous curves and hairpin bends of the 7.960-kilometre (4.94-mile) circuit. 3SEC A LAP But the “fantastic Frenchman,” as Brazilian commentators called him, soared ahead in the fifth lap and started pulling away so fast that he was increasing his advantage by three seconds over each of the next eight laps. But by the thirty-second! lap, Jarier had to drop out.| The aerofoil of his car was! badly damaged. While Jarier was
experiencing problems and seeing his lead cut, Fittipaldi, who had been lying sixth, began to overtake his rivals.
He first pushed his McLaren past Niki Lauda (Austria) in a Ferrari, on the nineteenth lap, and then continually kept up the pressure, finally passing Clay Regazzoni (Switzerland), also in a Ferrari, on the twenty-eighth lap, to take third position. But in the remaining laps he was unable to substantially reduce Pace’s 10-second lead and had to settle for second place. Jochen Mass (West Germany) finished third in a McLaren.
Fittipaldi continues to lead on points for this year’s driving competition. He won the Argentinian grand prix in Buenos Aires on January 12. Official results:—
