Barnacle Bill again
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Barnacle Bill seems assured of a place in the New Zealand Admiral’s Cup team. With maximum points scored yesterday from a brilliant win in the Royal Akarana Yacht Club’s 318-mile White Island race, and three wins and a second in the previous races, Barnacle Bill needs only 12 points to stay in the top three places on the points chart.
Only the first two yachts on points are assured of the trip—the third berth is the selectors’ prerogative. After a long haul down the Bay of Plenty coast and back to Auckland sailed in light and variable airs, Barnacle Bill (Ron Jarden and Ray Haslar) once again in the right places at the right time held her times so well that on corrected placings she was more than an hour and a
half ahead of Gerontius (Graham Eder). The only one to slip in placings was Inca (Evan Julian). She was only the fifth yacht to finish and slipped back to sixth on corrected times, allowing Gerontius to creep to level terms, second on the points chart. With two races yet to be sailed the top points scorers dropping the worst performance are Barnacle Bill (91), and Inca and Gerontius with 80.
Then there is a big drop back to Snow White (Bob Graham) with 61 points, Corinthian (Russ Hooper) with 60, and Koamaru (Brian Millar, Wellington), with 54.
Finishing times in the seventh Admiral’s Cup trial, with overall placings in brackets: — Quando. 3hr 17mln 42sec (5); Corinthian. 3:43:12 (4); Gerontius. 5:15:49 (2); Barnacle Bill, 6:29:29 (1); Inca. 7:2:12 (6); Snow White, 7:57:51 (3); Vulcan. 8:39:32 (12): Natelle, 9:26:34 (10); Lisa. 10:15:52 (7); Whispers of Wellington. 10:25:17 (9); Koamaru. 10:52:28 (8); Aggressor, 11:52:51 (11).
