Snow White sheds weight

CN.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. [ The skipper of Snow [White, Bob Graham, has reI sorted to drastic measures in la bid to improve the performance of his Lawrie Da- ; vidson-designed 42-footer in [time for the all-important last three races in the Dunghill Admiral’s Cup trial series. Graham has removed 13501 b of weight from Snow White - - 7 per cent of the yacht’s all up weight — looking for a marked gain in the boat’s downwind ability. He has his eye on the longer ocean legs which will be a feature of two of the most vital races of the trials — the 330-mile White Island race (double points) this week-end, and the 560-mile Three Kings race (triple points) starting on February 5.

Considerable as the weight shedding is, Snow White will still have a 50 per cent ballast ratio. Her downwind ability must improve, but she wiil miss her ballast going to windward in a breeze. Cutting torches were used to remove 11001 b of lead from the trailing edge of Snow White’s keel. Another 2501 b of ballast has been removed from inside the boat. After six' races Snow .White is seventh over all.
