Waikato Sale average better than expected

(.Vete Zealand Press Association>

HAMILTON. The majority of thoroughbred breeders will have been well pleased with the outcome of the first day of the annual Waikato Yearling Sale in Hamilton yesterday.

As expected, the yearlings■ sold more cheaply than in| the last two years, but there was not nearly the drop in the average that had been so widely predicted. In all, 123 of 187 lots offered were sold for an aggregate of $223,550, an average of $lBl7. In the face of the present economic! situation, this was a thoroughly satisfactory result compared with the first day last year when the 127 lots sold averaged $2134. There was a good sprinkling of Australian buyers in attendancee and between them they paid $66,600 for 30 lots. However, the top price of $7250 was paid by a New Zealand buyer. The ;Te Awamutu . trainer, W. Sanders, went to that figure to secure a handsome bay colt by Idomeneo from the Balloch mare, Lochbum. The colt is a grandson of the former brilliant racemare, Stretto, and is closely related to the fine Australian galloper, All Shot, which did his early racing from the Sanders stable. The top price for a filly and second top price of the day was $7OOO, which Mr A. Betar, of Sydney, paid for the Sovereign Prince—Maiden Over youngster. A well-grown brown, this filly was offered for sale on account of the Sovereign Lodge Stud, at Oliau. where Sovereign Prince stands. „ Mrs W. Itwin, of New Plymouth, paid $5600 for a brown colt by Rocky Mountain from Honev Light, by Callander, and Mr K. A. Johnstone, of New South Wales paid $5250 for a chestnut colt by Idomeneo from Honeyme. by Tip The Bottle. As most breeders had hoped, the more fashionably-bred youngsters sold extremely well, most appearing to reach their value, while the less prominent ones were a bit easier to obtain than has been the case during the last two years or so. The highest passing was $5OOO, shared by a Talpan n—Flory, colt and a colt by Battle Waggon from Little Honey. Another notable passing was $4OOO for a Rocky Mountain—Gay Marilyn colt.
