More Bealey Avenue work deferred
Money for the reconstruction this year of another section of Bealey Avenue has been withheld by the National Roads Board “in the meantime” as part of the board’s economy programme.
This was made clean yesterday by the District Commissioner of Works (Mr P. F. Rey-I nolds), when he was] asked to comment on a letter to the editor of “The Press.”
The letter, from Douglas R. Jack, 74 Flockton Street, read:—
‘‘To date w-e have seen the reconstruction of Bealey Avenue from Fitzgerald
Avenue to Barbadoes Street, which is now completed. ‘‘On good authority, I have been informed that this is all the reconstruction we are going to see for a while, and that this section was done from a grant from the National Roads Board. “If my source of information is correct, where is our City Council in this matter? When is the full reconstruction of Bealey Avenue taking place, because it is probably the only road in this country one can drive down and be-
come seasick, and still be on dry land. Some answers, please.” $90,000 approved Mr Reynolds said that the No. 14 District Roads Council, in its forecasts of expenditure, had approved of $90,000 this year for Bealey Avenue, which is a State highway. The decision, ,in effect, would have left about $50,000 for new work, with $40,000 needed to complete the paving of the section reconstructed at the eastern end of the avenue.
The $50,000 would have been used to start work on the reconstruction of another section, but the board, at its meeting just before Christmas. had deferred the expenditure of the $50,000. “This means that, in the meantime, the reconstruction work is removed from the three-year programme because the board does not have enough money to go round,” said Mr Reynolds.
