Seven wickets for Roberts

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) MADRAS.

The first day of the fourth test belonged to the West Indian fast bowler, Andy Roberts, and the Indian batsman, Gundappa Viswanath.

Roberts took seven wickets for 64 and Viswanath made a superb 97 not out of the Indian total of 190. The West Indies lost three wickets for 36 in just under an hour’s batting, to leave the game evenly poised. 25 FOR SERIES The 23-year-old Roberts brought his total of wickets for the series to 25 with some genuine fast bowling on a pitch at Cepauk Stadium which gave him little help. Viswanath, just sft 4in tall, tamed even Roberts and only a lack of partners prevented his second successive century. The low point of India’s innings came after Madan Lal had his stumps knocked askew by Roberts. India was 76 for 6. However, Viswanath took charge, reaching his 50 in 155 minutes and then taking 10 off an over by Roberts. Viswanath and Bishen Bedi put on 52 in 43 minutes for the ninth wicket. Viswanath batted for 228 minutes, hitting 14 fours, and made 79 of the last 114 runs. INDIA First innings F. M. Engineer c Greenldge b Julien .. .. 14 E. D. Solkar c Kallicharran b Julien 4 A. D.
