Cup win to Aust.

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) ADELAIDE.

Australia bustled Japan out of the Davis Cup eastern zone semi-final with a 4-1 victory yesterday. John Newcombe saved the day for his captain, Neale Fraser, who had predicted an easy, 5-0, win. It looked like coming true when Newcombe demolished Jun Kuki, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, in the first singles match. But Japan’s No. 1, Toshiro Sakai, forced the Australians to have second thoughts when he beat Phil Dent, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. However, Australia finished strongly. Newcombe and Dent beat Sakai and Ken Hirai, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, in the doubles, for a 2-1 lead, and then won the reverse singles. Newcombe defeated Sakai, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, and Dent beat Kuki, 8-6, 6-4, 6-3. Australia will now meet the winner between New Zealand and India.
