Explosion in bottle

(N.Z. Press Association i WANGANUI. Scientific tests will be made to determine the contents of a beer bottle which exploded when a teen-age boy kicked it in Wanganui on Wednesday afternoon. The boy’s hands were cut by flying glass as he shielded his eyes against the explosion, the police said today. The boy found the bottle floating near the Wanganui River mouth and brought it ashore. It was clip-capped, partly full of liquid and contained two cylinders of newspaper holding a solid greyish substance. The bottle exploded when the boy put it down and kicked it.

The paper cylinders were given to the police when the incident was reported and tests would be made, said Detective SeniorSergeant R. L. Butler. The explosion appeared to have been caused by a pressure build-up in the bottle under Wednesday’s heat, rather than by the contents themselves, he said.
