Gee offered contract to turn professional
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON.
David Gee, the Wellington cyclist on holiday in Australia, has been offered a contract to turn professional, but he has not yet decided to take It.
Gee, who won the King of the Mountains title in the Dulux six-day cycle race last year — his 28th in cycle tours — moved to New Zealand from Australia in 1967. Since then he has been prominent in New Zealand cycling. Gee returned to Australia for a seven-week holiday late in December.
Before moving to New Zealand Gee was a professional in Australia but was
unsponsored. He became reinstated as an amateur when he arrived in New Zealand. In a tape-recording received by another Wellington cyclist, Trevor Rice, yesterday, Gee said he had been offered a contract to turn professional for the Peugeot Cycles team. Peugeot, a French-based firm, recently moved into Australian cycling on a large scale.
