WELLINGTON. The rain held off just long enough at Pauatahanui this morning for the Rothmans national archery championship to be completed, and some records toppled in the field events. Gary Wright (Randwick, Wellington) showed that he is undisputedly the country’s top archer by winning the men’s freestyle field. Wright had been equal first with Charles Bilbee (Shore), but yesterday he pulled away without any trouble and had 64 points on Bilbee by the last end. C. Hoddinott (Randwick) was third. Wright also beat the old national field record by well over 100 points. WOMEN’S
A new national record was also set in the women’s freestyle by Merlene Burnett (Randwick), who had been running second by five points to Joan Austin (Victoria, Australia) but who finally beat her by only one point. She scored 726 to beat the old record of 644. Lexie Arnott (Dunedin) was third.
Another New Zealand record went to the junior boys bare bow winner, Robert McMillan (Wanganui) who shot 319 to beat the old record by 208 points. His sister, Vicki, took the junior girls bare bow title with 162. D. Harris (Featherston) won the men’s bare bow from B. Fraser (Randwick) and J. Hinchco (Manakau), and G. Wild (Randwick), won the women’s bare bow from D. Hamilton (Trentham). The junior boys was won by P. Glover (United Bowmen), from P. Preston (Auckland).
