Consortium talks
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Government will consider in the New Year what New Zealand can offer the! Pacific Islands in improved shipping services. Discussions are expected to | be held with the New Zea-; land Shinning Corporation so that a firm commitment can be made to contributing to a Pacific shipping consortium. Private shipping interests such as the Union Steam Ship Company might also be invited to take part. The Prime Minister (Mr Rowling) has said that the nations at the unofficial meeting of the South Pacific forum in Western Samoa agreed to come up with firm contributions to the shipping pool before the next forum Mr Rowling said he bemeeting in July. lieved it was unlikely that there would ever be a regional shipping line. There was support for a shipping pool or consortium arrangement. New Zealand was likely to be the main contributor to any such pool, but other forum members with shipping interests in the region were Tonga, Nauru, and Papua New Guinea.
