(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. After the shock defeats of the two top seeds on the first two days of the Quench Wellington tennis championships at Central Park, the w r ay is open for the talented Aucklandjunior Chris Lewis to win his first major titlff

Lewis, aged 17, the No. 3 seed, came through a testing third-round match against a fellow . Aucklander, Fred Whittaker, yesterday, 6-2, 7-6, to reach the quarter-finals of the men’s singles. In an earlier third-round match the second of the name players, Richard Hawkes, was disposed of. Hawkes, the No. 2 seed, did not have enough armament at his disposal and was beaten bv Peter Langsford (Auckland), 6-0, 5-7, 6-3. An inadequate performance tn the third set cost the fifthseeded New Zealand player. David Hawkes (Wellington) a place in the quarter-finals. Hawkes started his match well, but as it wore on his opponent, Matti Timonen (Finland), the fourth overseas seed, started to get on top., Hawkes took the first set 6-2, but lost the second 6-4, and then the decider 6-2. Wayne Cowley (Australia), the surprise packet on the first dav. walked a tightrope during his third-round match against Ole Palmer (Sweden) before scraping home 6-7, 7-6, 6-0.

Jaoa Soares, the second seed, from Brazil, beat Bjorn Wahlstrom, from Sweden, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. SPARKLING GAME

The .Lewis-Whittaker clash produced most of the sparkle. Whittaker, a former New Zealand and England junior champion, has a temperament to match his fiery game, and he did all he could to unsettle his younger opponent. But Lewis for the most part remained unruffled, and he

played some authoritativ shots. The women’s singles an through to the quarter-fina! with no real surprises. The top seed, Nina Dohrr (Sweden) easily beat the Can terbury junior, Anne McMaster, 6-0, 6-3. L. Ware! (Auckland) beat Christim Newton (Canterbury), 6-3, 6-2.
