Mayor moved

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 17. The Mayor (Sir DoveMeyer Robinson) was so moved at last night’s performance of the Korean Children’s Choir that he leapt to his feet at the end of the first half and dashed up to the front of the packed His Majesty’s theatre to announce a personal gift of $lOOO to go to hungry children of the world.

He said that he wanted to give a lead, as Mayor, to the citizens of Auckland to help children in all parts of the world through the World Vision charity. “Last night’s concert was the best of any entertainment I have ever seen. The singing, drills and discipline were excellent,” the Mayor said today. All the members of the choir are orphans or strays who have been taken into World Vision child-care homes in Korea. The organisation supports orphaned and underprivileged children mainly in South-East Asia, by arranging for their direct sponsorship through families in New Zealand. Sir Dove-Meyer said that the wonderful children in the choir were a fine example of what could be done for these youngsters

with help from nations such as New Zealand. “I felt Auckland had an obligation to help, and I had a particular obligation as Mayor to lead the donation,” said Sir Dove-Meyer. After the concert, many pledges of financial support were made by members of the audience, at the first of three concerts by the choir.
