Stewart first in Aust. G.P.
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) SYDNEY. M. Stewart, of Orange, has won the thirty-ninth Australian racing driver’s championship. Stewart, driving a Lola T 332, won the Australian Grand Prix at Oran Park yesterday by 59 seconds yesterday by 59 seconds from the 1973 Gold Star champion, J. McCormack (Elfin MRS) in a race packed with incidents. W. Brown, of Sydney, the favourite for the race in his Lola T 332, won the start and built'up a lead of nearly 20 seconds before retiring with only 11 laps to go. G. Lawrence of New Zealnd (Lola T 332) was third one lap behind the leaders. After Brown’s retirement K. Bartlett in another Lola T 332 inherited the lead but lost it four laps from the end when he hit the fence out of the tight Ampol corner on the new part of the circuit. Stewart, who had been third behind Bartlett in the earlier part of the race, was able to coast home to an easy win.
