Poll goes against Rockefeller
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON. A Harris opinion poll showed that 43 to 39 per cent of those surveyed opposed making Mr Nelson Rockefeller Vice-President because of his great wealth and how he used it, the “Washington Post” reported. The remaining 18 per cent had no opinion. The poll, taken early this month, also showed that 54 to 28 per cent of those surveyed felt that it was not proper for him to make SUS2m in gifts and loans to associates. The newspaper reported that 58 per cent felt that Mr Rockefeller was wrong to have his brother finance a campaign book critical of the former governor’s opponent in a political campaign, a former Supreme Court judge, Mr Arthur Goldberg. Those surveyed—by 47 to 34 per cent—believed his family’s great wealth would present him with a conflict of interest as Vice-President.
However, the poll also showed that if Mr Rockefeller were to become VicePresident 54 per cent felt that he was qualified to become President if necessary, while 35 per cent felt he was not.
