‘Save sugar’ campaign

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) TOKYO, Nov. 15. The Japanese people will: shortly be obliged to eat less; sweet cakes, candies and jams, and drink tea and coffee with less sugar. The Japanese Agriculture-' Forestry Ministry has an-1 nounced that Japanese makers of food containing j sugar—confectionery, soft! drinks, canned juice and jams—have decided to save sugar consumption by about! 10 per cent. This decision has been taken in response to the Ministry’s call for a “save sugar” campaign because of I the soaring prices in the world sugar market. The Ministry also said that it was asking department stores and supermarkets to reduce the volume of refined sugar sales as year-end gifts to about half the amount sold last year.

The campaign would also involve public consumers and could result in a relaxed restraint on the use of saccharine, a man-made sweetener.

The Ministry has also asked the Japan Housewives’ Federation for co-operation in conservation of sugar at home.

The Ministry said that it was planning to ask coffee shop and restaurant operators to serve smaller sugar packs to customers instead of the present 10-gramme bags.
