N.S.W. wickets fall

(N.Z. Press Assn —Copyright? SYDNEY. The M.C.C. was satisfied to hold Australia’s strongest batting state, New South Wales, to 231 for six on an easy paced wicket at stumj>* on the opening day of their four-day match in Sydney.

M. H. Denness had gambled with mixed success on early life in the Sydney Cricket Ground wicket and sent New South Wales in to bat. After P. Lever took a wicket in the third over, fortunes swung back and fourth.

At tea, New South Wales was 171 for three, and seemed to be heading for a

big score. But then Lever, G. G. Arnold and D. L. Underwood each took a wicket in the last session of play, when New South Wales added only another 60 runs.

Lever, opening the bowling for the first time, must have improved his test chances with his two for 48 off 12 overs on a pitch which quickly lost any life it held. He worked up to a fast pace and unleashed several venomous bumpers. The other new-ball bowlers, Arnold and C. M. Old, both seemed to bowl within themselves to finish with one wicket each. New South Wales’ two test batsmen, the captain, D. Walters, and I. Davis, had differing success. Davis scored a stylish 67 not out and handled the bowling with ease, but Walters fell to the hook shot when he was 16 and joined the growing number of Australian batsmen who have been caught on the leg side on the tour. New South Wales’ top

scorer to date is the opening batsman, A. Turner, who scored an aggressive 72 before he became another victim of mis-hit hook. R. McCosker continued his consistency with another determined 52.
