Police inquiry into streaking
The Christchurch police will inquire into streaking during the carnival at Mount Hutt last Sunday.
The acting head of the Christchurch police district (Superintendent G. E. Twentyman) said on Wednesday the police were not aware that streaking was as extensive as alleged by a correspondent of “The Press.”
“Nothing was done about the two streakers we did hear about because it was thought unlikely that anyone would release their identity,” said Mr Twentyman.
“However, we shall now! be making inquiries from the policeman there to find out what happened.” The correspondent, who signed • himself “Family Skier”, wrote: “How disappointing the carnival at Mount Hutt was spoiled by organised streaking. “Extensive publicity was given for the public to enjoy a carnival. Throughout the morning the Radio Avon announcer asked for streakers to compete in a race, not believing it could take place. “A male and a female did a run down the hill ending among the crowd. Shortly ■ afterwards, mass hysteria took over, and at leant a dozen men and several topless women raced, ending among the crowd.
“The policeman on duty obviously did not have his family to watch this degrading event, as I did. Why were no charges laid?”
