Council plans flats for elderly
The Waimairi County Council’s town planning committee yesterday heard an application from the council for the construction of three blocks of flats for The elderly.
Subject to approval the council proposes to build the flats at 325 Main North Road (22 units); 8 Cleland Street, Belfast (seven units); and 23 to 25 Mooray Ave, Bishopdale (six units). No obejctions were received.
In a report to the hearing the Road Transport Division of the Ministry of Transport said it saw the introduction of the units on the Main
North Road as a substantial traffic hazard. Crossing the road could be dangerous for elderly tenants. An application for a specified departure to permit the use of 1.55 hectares of land at Station Road, Belfast, as a machinery contractors depot was made by Prestons Contracting, Ltd. The Canterbury Frozen Meat Company objected to the proposal. The hearing received a letter from the Canterbury Regional Planning Authority w-hich said that the area was zoned Industrial DI and pro- ’ posed uses for it were those i allied to the meat and wool ’industry. Should it be used jby the applicant it could ’prejudice further use of the land for the purpose it was ini ended, the letter said.
In submissions the applicant company said its present facilities did not permit expansion of business. If the departure was granted the company intended to use the site to house its own vehicles and a contracting plant.
