Deputy Mayor’s post

Sir, — I am amused at the proposal made in your columns recently that Mrs Helen Garret be made Deputy Mayor of Christchurch. One recalls how the retiring Mayor, Mr Neville Pickering, was repeatedly taken to task for being “politically biased” and airing political views. Mrs Garrett is a member of the National Party and consequently will be exposed to the same criticism. Or does it only work one way? — Yours, etc, SELWYN. October 25, 1974.
