Prebbleton power project
Sir, — While the New Zealand Electricity Department >. feeds power into
Islington and back out again ever more semi-parallel lines will be demanded through Christchurch and its outskirts. On the other hand Rolleston has been planned to reduce the future demand on the amenities of Christchurch. Electricity is an amenity. Because of the circumstances, changed since the Waitaki Basin-Lansdowne-Bromley-Islington line was first planned, it is inevitable that some old patterns of thought and planning will still be present. What is needed is a mind fresh to the possibilities offered, and aware of the shortcomings of present policy. Mr Bailey is fresh to the position of Minister of Electricity. Will he undertake an examination of the situation? — Yours, etc., P.R. October 17, 1974.
[The Minister of Electricity (Mr Bailey) replies: “There is a misunderstanding in the reference “feeds power into Islington and back out again.” The proposals are aimed at lessening the dependence on Islington and giving a more direct feed to Bromley, as well as providing an additional feed to Islington. I will be meeting members of the LincolnPrebbleton Action Committee on November I to discuss the proposals.”]
