Road to Temple Basin
Sir, — The Arthur’s Pass National Park Board should be congratulated for rejecting a proposal from ski clubs for a road from Arthur’s Pass into Temple Basin. The proposal involved bulldozing a permanent scar across a major portion of the view from the main iroad. The board, however, is I unfairly criticised by Mr Oscar Coberger “The Press” (October 24) who wants the; road built although it would encroach on the visual pleasure of thousands of motorists f or the convenience of a few skiers. Mr Coberger overlooks that the elderly, not-so-fit and tourists already have access to alpine tops because the pass; road goes right through; them. Skiers have eight other Canterbury ski-fields to choose from if they do not like the walk to Temple Basin. Perhaps Mr Coberger who is over 70 and still enjoys ski-ing owes much of his present good health to always having to walk up to the basin. — Yours, etc., BRUCE WATSON. October 25, 1974.
