No daylight saving
American and New Zealand bases in the Antarctic will 1 remain on New Zealand standard time this summer and not change over to. daylight-saving time as will be done in New Zealand on November 3. Mr R. B. Thomson, superI intendent of the Antarctic [Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, said in Christchurch yesterday that the decision had been made because it was more convenient for scientific purposes. New Zealand time was normally 12 hours ahead of Greenwich mean time on which most scientific observations were based. All American bases except Siple Station, on the Antarctic Peninsula, used New Zealand standard time for convenience, Mr Thomson said. When New Zealand goes on to daylight saving, this 12hour convenience w’ould be lost. The only effect daylight saving would have on Antarctic operations will be on flights between Christchurch and the south. Everyone on board would have to. put his watch back an hour on flights south, and put them on an hour on the return journey.
