Holiday traffic too fast
Microwave speed detectors on the main roads out of Christchurch detected many motorists breaking . the 50 m.p.h. limit in the heavy holiday traffic late yesterday, the Ministry of Transport reported.
The new miniaturised microwave units were in use yesterday, and some drivers were checked at up to 75 m.p.h. Traffic in the city was reported to be comparatively quiet late yesterday, but it started to become heavy on the Main North and Main South roads from about 3 p.m. By 5 p.m., traffic was almost bumper to bumper on many parts of the main roads, and excessive speed and following too closely* were the main faults, traffic officers reported. Many caravans were reported on the roads. The traffic had become quite light by 9 p.m. All available traffic officers will be on duty during the holiday week-end, and the Ministry has warned motorists to keep their speed down, and keep well back.
