50 counts in murder case
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) NEW YORK, Oct. 25. Calvin Jackson, aged 27, described simply as a drifter, has been charged with killing nine elderly women in what is believed to be one of the largest indictments for murder against one man handed down in Manhattan. The 50-count indictment, including three charges of rape, accuses Jackson of stabbing, strangling, or smothering the women in their rooms during the course of petty thefts. Eight of the murders occurred in the Park Plaza Hotel on West 77th Street, one of the city’s shabby single-room hotels, where Jackson lived v.lth a girlfriend and worked as a parttime porter. Since Jackson’s mental competency is still under question, Justice George Roberts of the Manhattan Supreme Court has entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf, and has set a hearing for October 29.
