Concorde in U.S.
LOS ANGELES, October 25. Concorde, the BritishFrench supersonic airliner, yesterday made its maiden flight into Los Angeles Airport, under the watchful eye of environmentalists, and managed to register an acceptable noise-level on recording instruments. Winding up its west coast tour of the United States, it flew from San Francisco to Alaska, and then doubled back to Los Angeles with a passenger load of airline officials, dignitaries, and reporters. Taking off from San Francisco at 9.30 a.m., it arrived in Anchorage 2 hrs 5 mins later. It made the 2300-mile flight from Anchorage to Los Angeles in 2hrs 35mins, travelling at an average speed of 1000 miles an hour. As it flew into Los Angeles Airport, watched by a crowd of 3000, environmentalists and airport authorities took careful measurements of its sound levels. Mr Richard Procunier, of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency — a neutral body in the airportnoise dispute — said that the sound level was 102 decibels, the level recorded by many other jets using the airport. The low noise level was partly due to the skilful landing by the French pilot, Mr Andre Turcat, who brought the aircraft in without using the braking flaps — one of the main contributors to “jet whine.” Bhutto in Moscow The Pakistan Prime Minister (Mr Bhutto) is on a twoday official visit to the Soviet Union, accompanied by his Minister of Education (Mr Abdul Hafiz Pirzada), Minister of State for Defence and Foreign Affairs (Mr Aziz Ahmed), and Foreign Secretary (Mr Agha Shahi). — ' —Karachi, Oct. 25.
