Senate move on F.B.I.
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON. The United States Senate has voted to limit the term of the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to one 10-year period. If the House of Representatives approves, the bill would put a ceiling on the term of the Chief Federal Investigator for the first time.
The action arises from widespread criticism of the late Mr J. Edgar Hoover, who served as Director of the F. 8.1. for 48 years, and wielded vast influence within successive Goverments. Mr Hoover died in 1972, and was succeeded temporarily by Mr Patrick Gray, who resigned during the Watergate investigation. The present director is Mr Clarence Kelley.
