Musician dies
Harry Carney, aged 64. baritone saxophone player in the Duke Ellington band since he was 16 has died in Beth Israel Hospital, New York, where he had been a patient for a week and a half for treatment of pneumonia and phlebitis. Carney was the longest lasting sideman in jazz history and was according to the “Encyclopaedia of Jazz,” the first and greatest performer on baritone saxophone, creator of a rich deep sound that has never been duplicated.
