Newcomers in bowls teams
Four new players have been named in the three Christchurch bowls teams for the first round of the Rothmans national inter-centre tournament next month.
They are P. G. Jolly (Christchurch), N. Poole (Sumner), N. E. Bell (Fen-
dalton), and K. G. Shivas i (Burnside). Poole earned a place by winning the ’ champion - of - champions singles last season and the other three also improved on good records last season. The most surprising omission is W. Hayes (Belfast), who has commanded a place — usually in the first-choice four — for a number of years. Also omitted is J. M. Gill (formerly South Brighton, now Papanui), who skipped one of the fours last summer. M. J. G. Robson (Woolston W.M.C.) was not available. The selectors (Messrs G. T. Cotton, D. Martin, and A. Memory) have stuck mainly with proven combinations, and they have recognised most, of the leading players of last season. However, one exception is W. T. Newburgh (Elmwood), who performed extremely well at the national championships. The teams are:— Red team.—Singles: G. R. Speer (Cashmere). Pairs: B. W. Sinclair (St Albans) and W. R. Wilkinson (Beckenham). Fours: Joly, B. J. Smith (Linwood), K. G. Murray (Linwood), J. A. Dale (Burwood). Black team. —Singles: Poole. Pairs: M. L. King and A. Memory (Woolston W.M.C.). Four: Bell, B. S. Johns (Christchurch), R. T. Bailey (Canterbury), Shivas. Green team.—Singles: S. E. Lawson (Christchurch) Pair: P. F. Meier and T. W. Dixon (South Brighton). Four: F. W. Hoy (Spreydon), C, H. Thompson (Oxford), L. C. Lindley (Christchurch), T. F. Coup (Kaiapoi). The green team will play -in the zone six elimination at Westport, and the red and black teams in the zone five elimination in Christchurch. The first round is on November 24.
