Aust. to take Cypriot girls
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Oct. 14. About 2000 virgins from Cyprus would emigrate to Australia, the Australian Minister of Labour (Mr Clyde Cameron) said today. He told a building union conference that the Cypriot girls, aged between 12 and 20, had fled from their home villages when fighting broke out on Cyprus in July. “The virgins place great emphasis on their virginity,” Mr Cameron said. “Australia is considered a safe place for them to come to. It should make us feel proud that we should be uhosen to take them.”
Mr Cameron added that he had been told of the girls’ plight by members of the Cypriot communities in Melbourne and Sydney, but that immigration officials were having trouble arranging the girls’ transport to Australia because of the situation on Cyprus.
