Concern for office
Sir, — I must reply to your report of the Mt Herbert candidates’ meeting on Tuesday night. I have no argument with the accuracy of your statements. I wish to promise the Mt Herbert electors that I have a much deeper concern for the office of councillor than your headline would suggest. Standing before an audience and speaking within a restrictive time limit, an inexperienced speaker is inclined perhaps not to convey fully every point in the manner which he would have it interpreted. I wish the electors and my supporters to understand that I covet the seat of councillor only on the condition of wide and general support from them. I “do” wish to be returned, especially in the light of the unprecedented interest shown in this election. Every councillor who is finally elected will certainly reflect with some pride that he or she faced a strong challenge and came through. — Yours, etc., MURRAY D. A. RADCLIFFE October 1, 1974.
