Right to stand

Sir, —I am puzzled as to why the Mayor’s secretary (Mr Power) should be the object of such harsh criticism by standing for the City Council in the elections, unless of course it is naughty of him to change his mind. Surely there is nothing wrong in him doing this, whether by persuasion or voluntarily. Indeed it could be commendable. I do not know Mr Power, although I did consult him once on a council matter.

I should imagine him to be a ratepayer, and of good character, therefore entitled to stand should he so desire. He certainly acknowledges his party affiliations. Whether it be pettiness, jealousy, or fear that he may be elected which has caused the controversy is hard to assess, but time could be more wisely spent tackling some of the major metropolitan issues.— Yours etc., RICHARD G. BELL. October 1, 1974.
