Accusation of racism

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Remarks made in the Auckland Magistrates’ Court by Mr P. M. Browne, S.M., were reported on Monday to the Race Relations Conciliator by Mr J. P. Anderton, the Auckland mayoralty Labour candidate. On Friday, the Magistrate told two Samoans whom he was sentencing for assault that “Island folk” responded to every situation with physical violence. Today, the Magistrate refused to discuss the subject. i During the week-end, Mr Browne claimed that there ;had been a misunderstanding about his reported comjments. “There was no indention to criticise Islanders ! generally,” he said. “I was i involved with them for 17 to 18 years while in practice in South Auckland, and it now upsets me to be considered a racist,” he said.
