SIMS SAW OTAGO IN DUPLICATE
Canterbury’s Rugby centre, G. S. Sims, had the most unnerving experience of his career at Lancaster Park on Saturday. Each time he looked towards the goal-line he saw 30 Otago players barring the way. In the first half, Sims was struck in the face by the ball at point-blank range while making a spectacular attempt to charge down a clearing kick by L. W. Mains, the Otago fullback.
For the rest of the game he suffered from double vision and a pounding head. The condition was aggravated when he ran into a headhigh tackle by Mains in the second half. He recovered speedily, however, and after the game voiced his disappointment that the season had ended. “I feel like continuing for a few more weeks,” he said. “Because of my run of injuries, I did not get into the game until about half-way through the season. Still, I should be all the keener next season.” Sims, an All Black in 1972, confirmed that he would again play his Rugby in Christchurch next year.
