Town site decision

A further step towards an educational, cultural, and arts centre on the University of Canterbury’s 5 J-acre town site was taken yesterday. The University Council formally accepted "in principle a proposal which had been placed before it last month by the Canterbury Arts Centre Steering Committee. The decision to leave the formal approval of the scheme until this month had been taken to give individuals

and organisations a chance to give their views. There was little discussion yesterday on the proposals, which would lead to the setting up of an independent trust to administer the site.

The University Council reaffirmed that it would require evidence of the financial viability of the scheme. It will also seek assurances that the Christchurch Technical Institute will be able to use the site for a period. The institute wants to use part of the Student Union building, the registry office, gymnas-

ium, and workshop, the geography and English departments, the education department, and the old library. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Professor N. C. Phillips) said that it was envisaged the Technical Institute would use the buildings it required from February next year for two years. This would allow a transitional period for the proposals of the Community Arts Centre Steering Committee to be put into effect.
