Cooks low on food
(N.Z. Press Association) RAROTONGA, Sept. 30. The Islands trading ship Lorena is urgently awaited by many people in the Cook Islands, as food is running short because of delays to the second Island trader, the Toa Moana.
The Lorena is now sailing from Auckland to Niue, which is even more short of food and other supplies. From Niue, she will visit Rarotonga. The Toa Moana is also about to leave for Rarotonga but with limited food supplies.
Caterers on Rarotonga have only just enough food for the South Pacific Conference being held there, and some conference supplies have had to come in by special airfreight at extra cost. Meat for local purchase in the Cooks is almost unavailable, and there is little choice. Butter is virtually unobtainable. It is difficult to obtain rice, potatoes, onions, cabbage, or cauliflower.
