East End murder
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright} LONDON, Sept. 29. Mr Alfred (“Old Alfie”) Cohen, aged 69, a wellknown character in the East End of London, was battered to death yesterday for a handful of pennies, but his killers missed a fortune. “Old Alfie” had had his tiny tea kiosk, the “Hole-in - the-Wall,” for 40 years. It was open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and had become an institutuion with East Enders, taxidrivers, policemen, porters, and others who worked through the night. In the early hours of yesterday, '‘Old Alfie” was i beaten up by two youths , who ran off, leaving him |dying in the gutter. Money was scattered around, but the robbers took only pennies — if anything at all. ! Today, detectives disclosed I that, hidden in cans and paper bags, "Old Alfie” kept a £lOO,OOO fortune secreted I in his kiosk. The money was 'in coins and notes, some of 'which had been withdrawn (from circulation years ago.
