Polynesian arrests

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 30. Seventy-two per cent of those arrested by the Auckland police task force between June 26 and August 23 were either Maoris or Islanders.

Last Friday and Saturday task force made 11 arrests. One arrested person was an Islander, three were Maoris.i

and seven were European. The week-end before, the task force — which the police see as an extension of their mobile beat system — made 15 arrests. Six of those arrested were Maoris, six were Islanders, and three were Europeans. The head of the Auckland police, Assistant Commissioner G. Tait, released these figures when he was asked for his comments on claims from a number of groups that the task force showed a racial bias. He denied a reported statement that the

police had claimed that the majority of task force arrests were of Europeans. The officer in charge of the task force, Inspector R. Dallow, when interviewed recently, said he thought that more than 80 per cent of those arrested were Polynesians. At the time he said that he did not have any figures on the number of different racial groups.

The figures released today showed that 72 per cent of those arrested were Maoris or Islanders.
