Tour organiser to explain
(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, September 30. The man who organised a tour of Southern Africa-by the Hamilton cricket club, Tui, has, received a letter from the New Zealand Government about the tour.
Mr R. McKinnon, a Hamilton lawyer, last evening would not divulge the contents of the letter, but he said that he would explain the club’s position to the Government this week. Mr McKinnon said that the team had visited the Rhodesian Prime Minister (Mr Smith) as private individuals. “This was arranged purely as a private tour. We were asked by a friend if we would like to meet the Prime Minister, and we said, ‘Yes.’ There was no official ap-
proach from the Government.”
Rhodesian Ministry of Information photographs and
press releases from the meeting with Mr Smith termed the Tuis “the New Zealand cricket team.” Mr McKinnon said that the photographs he had seen had used the words “a New Zealand cricket team from Hamilton.” “At no stage were we made out to be a representative side. We were private individuals,” he said. He said that team members had not noticed any adverse reaction on their return. He was keen to see a Rhodesian team visit this country — though recognising that it would not be practical.
