University ‘must move’

The University of Canterbury Council has no intention of departing from its resolution to complete the move of the university to Ilam by February next year. This was made clear at a meeting of the council yesterday by the president of the Students’ Association (Dr J, J. Benefield) and by the

Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips). The public and students must be left in no doubt that the move would be made as planned, even if it did mean some inconvenience for some departments, Professor Phillips said. No date has yet been set for .the completion of the geography staff block or the psychology staff block, both of which were originally due for completion by August this year, It is proposed that

these blocks will have to be occupied floor by floor. The university council agreed to plans to construct a coffee bar, post office and; bank under the James Hight library-arts building at an estimated cost of $60,000. The management of the coffee bar, which will be open to all at the university, will be vested in the students’ association and the necessary building alterations will be made by the university’s maintenance department.
