Prison diet
Sir, —It strikes me as strange that it has taken until the so-called enlightened year of 1974 to change prisoners’ No. 1 restricted diet penalty of Boz of bread, 21b of potatoes, 1| pints of milk, and loz of dripping a day to something more civilised. Doctors and
nutritionists, through television, radio, magazines, newspapers, meetings, etc., have been preaching the necessity of a balanced diet for the body to function efficiently. Why has it taken so long for the message to sink in? Segregation is degrading, and it surprises me that these inmates ever have the will-power to rise above their situation. Fear, will not produce the best results. How effective are our leaders? Let the ordinary person search his mind for anomalies, then put his ideas on paper, and post them off to a wide range of interested authorities. Speak up clearly so many may hear.—Yours, etc., MARY C. SCHOFIELD. September 28, 1974.
