Pakehas
Sir, —I am one of a number who are provoked by racist committees constantly refering to the white race as “pakehas,” but continuing to designate other races by proper names such as Maori and Polynesian. “Pakeha” is an epithet of contempt and hatred, yet is rapidly being given an official standing. If this is to become an established practice, then in common justice, the Maoris and Polynesians should also become officially designated, by one of several epithets now used to describe them.— Yours, etc., CELTIC. September 29, 1974.
