Professor appointed

A New York lecturer, Dr R. A. Lange, has been appointed to the chair of Asian languages at the University of Canterbury. Dr Lange is an associate professor of Japanese at Columbia University, New York. Professor Lange will take up the appointment in the middle of next year. The position has been vacant two years. Professor Lange, who is 43. lived in Japan for seven years before he began teaching Japanese language, linguistics, history, and literature at the University* of California and Columbia University, nine years ago. During service with the United States Air Force, he studied Chinese. In 1960 he graduated bachelor of arts! from the International Chris-’ tian University in Tokyo. On his return to the I United States he was awarded a grant to continue studying, and in 1971 he graduated master of arts in Far Eastern languages and literature from the University of Michigan.
